Hyun Bin and Han Ji-min’s Romantic Moments in ‘Hyde Jekyll, Me’
‘Hyde, Jekyll, Me’ is a drama that aired in 2015. This drama is based on Lee Choong-ho’s webtoon Dr. Jekyll Is Mr. Hyde, which gave a romantic-comedy spin on the literary character. This drama tells the story of Gu Seo-jin (Hyun Bin), who is a third-generation chaebol who runs the theme park Wonder Land. He seemingly has everything – looks, brains, and fortune. He is also in line to become the next CEO of Wonder Group, the conglomerate his family owns, even though his cousin Ryu Seung-yeon (Han Sang-jin), who oversees Wonder Hotel, is his rival for the position. But Seo-jin has dissociative identity disorder. Whenever his heart rate exceeds 150, another personality emerges, and unlike Seo-jin’s usual cold, cynical, and ruthless self, Robin is kind, gentle, and has a savior complex. This split personality began 15 years ago, and Seo-jin’s doctor, Kang Hee-ae, believes that Robin is a manifestation of his guilt regarding a traumatic incident from back then. Because of this, Seo-jin avoids anything that might cause him to have a strong physical or emotional reaction which could trigger Robin’s reappearance, even if that means shutting himself away from the world and eschewing any meaningful relationships. Jang Ha-na (Han Ji-min), has just returned to Korea after spending several years in the United States with Cirque du Soleil. Like her grandfather and father before her, she is set to take over as a circus master of the circus show at Wonder Land, which had once been the park’s primary attraction. Ha-na vows to save the failing circus and dreams of revamping it back to its former glory. But she finds herself butting heads with Seo-jin, who wants to get rid of it due to low ticket sales and high overhead costs. With every antagonistic encounter with Ha-na, Seo-jin notes the alarming spike on his heart monitor, and the two become further embroiled with each other. After Dr. Kang tells Seo-jin that he has found a cure for his condition, she gets kidnapped by a mysterious assailant who almost succeeds in killing Ha-na, making her the only witness. However, the traumatic experience has caused Ha-na to block out the man’s face, and she goes to Dr. Kang’s student, hypnotherapist Yoon Tae-joo (Sung Joon), to help her remember. With Ha-na’s life in danger, the more Robin appears, and the more she falls for him, to Seo-jin’s dismay. Hana is angry at Seo-jin’s very childish behavior and intends to approach him right away to get an apology, and also asks a lot of things he doesn’t understand. Hearing this, Robin says he knows, and leads the way. Robin takes her to the circus office instead, playing with hand puppets to apologize. Puppet Robin tells Hana that there are things he finds difficult to explain, but that he wishes for someone to understand him, no matter what. She puts Puppet Hana on her hand and says that she gets it, but then asks how long she has to hold back all of her questions. Puppet Hana inches closer to challenge him, and Puppet Robin suddenly swoops in for a kiss, and then Robin follows suit with a real kiss. After Hana picks up the phone from Tae-joo, Hana goes for a walk, mulling over all the times that Robin came to her rescue and she turns to come to Seo-jin’s rescue. That pattern holds true for everything between them, including all the times that Robin comforted her, and she comforted Seo-jin. She doesn’t have a chance to come to any conclusions before a car races down a dirt road, and then she whips around at the sound of footsteps coming toward her … It’s Robin, walking toward her with determination. He stops right in front of her for a beat and then swoops in for a kiss, and her eyes flutter closed. Hana and Robin cuddle on the couch as she admires his trophy, and he asks if she thinks it would be okay for him to go on a radio talk show that invited him. She tells him to do it, and he’s amazed that he’ll get to leave further proof of his existence out in the world. She asks him to draw something new so that they can go back to the convention next year and the year after that, and he takes the pen portion out of his award and hands it to her. He tells her that she’s his pen, and she squeezes his cheeks together until his lips pucker, and plants a kiss. He traces his finger along her lip and then goes in for more kisses, and wraps his arms around her to continue the smoochies. After Robin lost his memory, Hana makes a decision and enlists the help of all their friends. She gets all dressed up and brings Robin back to the place where they walked the red carpet together. They hold hands in the elevator like they did the first time, and there’s a red carpet all lined up, just without the photographers and fans this time. Secretary Kwon comes out to greet them, and pins a flower to Robin’s lapel before leading them inside. Robin’s jaw drops when they get inside to find the hall decorated for a wedding, with their friends waiting for them. Hana smiles at him and says that their best memory isn’t lost yet, so she’s going to create it for him now. She turns it into a question and asks if he’ll let her create the new memory with him now, and asks, “Will you marry me?” Friends cheer them on as if this is all perfectly normal, and Robin and Hana exchange rings and share a kiss. They cuddle in bed while watching the prerecorded congratulations from their wedding guests, and both of them wonder who invited Detective Na.
